This manual presents background information on school safety and action steps for use by schools, parents, students, and community and business groups in developing a strategy to ensure safe schools in their communities.
Abstract
The ingredients for creating safe, orderly, drug-free schools include making school safety a priority, involving parents and citizens, developing a broad-based team, conducting a school site assessment, reviewing the law, creating a safe school plan, developing emergency procedures, creating a positive educational climate, actively engaging students, communicating, and evaluating progress. The manual lists specific action steps for schools, students, parents, and community and community groups. It also presents information regarding preventing juvenile gun violence in schools, searches for weapons and drugs, drug testing of student athletes, truancy, uniforms, alternative education programs for expelled students, conflict resolution, mentoring, information sharing, and effective data collection.
